1 Anya's Ghost By Vera Brosgol Anya's Ghost By Vera Brosgol Anya could really use a friend. But her new BFF isn't kidding about the "forever" part... Of all the things Anya expected to find at the bottom of an old well, a new friend was not one of them. Especially not a new friend who's been dead for a century. Falling down a well is bad enough, but Anya's normal life might actually be worse. She's embarrassed by her family, self-conscious about her body, and she's pretty much given up on fitting in at school. A new friend?even a ghost?is just what she needs. Or so she thinks. Anya's Ghost, the debut graphic novel by cartoonist Vera Brosgol, begins as its teenage protagonist, Anya Borzakovskaya, prepares to leave her home for another day at the private Hamilton School. On her way to school, she encounters several of her classmates, including rebellious friend Siobhan; her popular basketball player crush, Sean, and his girlfriend, Elizabeth; and Dima, a nerdy Russian boy whom Anya avoids. After seeing Sean and Elizabeth kiss and getting into an argument with Siobhan, she decides to take a different route to school. She falls into an isolated dry well, where she finds the skeleton of a young woman named Emily Reilly, who died after falling into the well decades earlier. Emily's ghost emerges from the skeleton and keeps Anya company during her two days trapped in the well, eventually alerting her to the presence of a passerby, who rescues her. When she escapes the well, she believes that Emily's ghost will remain there, as the spirit cannot move far from her bones. Courtesy of Macmillan
After returning to school, Anya learns that Emily has accompanied her out of the well, as one of the ghost's finger bones found its way into Anya's bag. Emily soon establishes herself as Anya's friend and helper, giving her test answers, keeping watch for authorities while Anya smokes cigarettes, and sneaking into Sean's locker to learn his class schedule. She also reveals the circumstances of her death, telling Anya that she fell into the well while fleeing from the man who murdered her parents. The ghost becomes particularly interested in Anya's would-be romance with Sean, supposedly because of her grief following the death of her own boyfriend in World War I. Emily helps Anya gain entrance to a party that Sean is attending and encourages her to wear revealing clothing in the hope of capturing his attention. At the party, however, Anya learns that Sean and Elizabeth are far from the perfect couple she imagined them to be, as Elizabeth is forced to allow and even facilitate Sean's infidelity. Although Anya is disgusted by Sean's true nature, Emily pushes her to go after him and becomes increasingly aggressive about controlling Anya's life.
Leaving Emily behind at home for the day, Anya goes to the town library to research Emily's death, hoping that solving her murder will allow the ghost to rest in peace. With Dima's help, she discovers that Emily has been lying about her past and had not fallen into the well while fleeing a murderer; instead, Emily fell while running from an angry mob after she murdered the young man she loved and his girlfriend. Anya returns home and confronts Emily, who has hidden her finger bone so that Anya cannot return her to the well. While Anya searches the house for the bone, Emily threatens her family, causing Anya's mother to fall down the stairs and tormenting her younger brother, Sasha, after he goes to bed. Anya finally locates Emily's bone and runs to the well, pursued by the angry ghost. She throws the bone into the well, but Emily's desire to escape is strong enough that the ghost is able to possess her own skeleton and climb out of the well. Although Anya initially runs, she stops to have a heartfelt conversation with Emily, who at last lets go of the pain that was keeping her from resting in peace. As the novel concludes, Anya's classmates fill in the well as part of a public safety project. Anya reunites with Siobhan and announces that she has quit smoking, no longer wanting to pretend to be someone she is not.
A multidimensional work, Anya's Ghost blends the coming-of-age theme common in young-adult literature with elements of the horror genre as well as an exploration of immigrant life, inspired in part by Brosgol's own experiences after moving to the United States from what is now Russia as a child. A skillfully constructed literary work featuring expressive illustrations, the graphic novel establishes many of its key thematic concerns within its first several pages. At the very start of the novel, Anya rejects the traditional Russian breakfast her mother prepares, signaling her overall rejection of any characteristics she believes will mark her as an immigrant. She likewise chooses to select food such as fat-free yogurt and diet soda, which hint at the issues with body image that trouble Anya throughout the novel. Her journey to school introduces the remaining key characters of the novel, including Dima, whom Anya specifically avoids so that her own carefully constructed American image is not undermined by his so-called fresh-off-the-boat behavior; Sean, to whom Anya is attracted in spite of his longtime girlfriend; and, finally, the ghost Emily.
In many ways, Emily serves as a dark counterpart to Anya; whereas Anya pines over Sean from afar but does not pursue him until encouraged by Emily, Emily let her own unrequited infatuation go too far, murdering the object of her affections and his own significant other after being rejected. Emily likewise alters her physical appearance and behavior during her time with Anya, changing her hairstyle and beginning to smoke ghostly cigarettes as she adjusts to the world of the twenty-first century. Her behavior is reminiscent of Anya's but taken to the extreme, and Anya's recognition of that fact leads to her eventual change of mindset. Ultimately, through its supernatural elements and keen observations of teenage life, Anya's Ghost warns its readers about the perils of wanting what others ostensibly have and the importance of remaining true to oneself. 2ff7e9595c
